Most people’s first type of mouse is the one you get free with your computer and probably looks like a bar of soap; it also has a very low resolution and needed to be cleaned every week. Today's mice are very different, with sleek designs, high resolution, and improved optical technologies that rely on sealed electronic sensors that never get dirty but the problem with these advancements is that choosing a mouse is often confusing. Here is some information you should find interesting before you decide to choose your new mouse.

Finding the right size:
Most modern mice are bigger than the first types and are designed to fit comfortably in the adult hand. If you have small hands, however, or if you are buying a mouse for a child, you can also find small sized mice. If you are looking for a smaller mouse, you might also want to consider notebook mice, since they are intended to be used in cramped spaces and tend to be smaller than desktop mice.

Choose a Shape:
Most modern mouse designs are symmetrical, meaning that each side is the same as the other. Older mouse designs tended to be asymmetrical — curved to one side, usually to the left so the thumb rests on the inside of the curve and the little finger rests on the outside of the curve. With both mouse designs, the bottom end of the mouse is usually wider than the top end, giving the mouse more stability in the hand. Which mouse shape you choose depends on what feels better in your hand, but recent studies have suggested that modern symmetrical mice are more comfortable and less fatiguing than asymmetrical mice.

Ball or Optical?
The first mice worked on the simple but ingenious principle of a rubber ball that turned plastic rollers. Unfortunately, these rollers collect lint, hair, and oil, and dirty rollers make it very difficult to move the mouse with accuracy. Newer optical mice solve this problem by replacing the ball and rollers with electronic sensors. Since they have no moving parts, optical mice don't get dirty, and their increased precision makes optical mice an excellent choice.

Wired or Wireless?
A wired mouse has a flexible cord that plugs into the computer; it draws its power from the computer itself and needs no batteries. A wireless mouse has no cords and transmits its information to a small receiver that plugs into the computer; wireless mice usually need two AA batteries for power. Mice with cords are sometimes easier to use because you don't have to worry about pointing the mouse at the receiver (some mice are very picky about this), and you don't have the extra hassle of keeping your mouse in batteries. Also, some of the newer wired mice have very thin, flexible cords (sometimes they're even retractable) that help you keep the desktop neat. I still prefer my wireless mice because that's one fewer cord to get twisted and tangled around the computer.
How Many Buttons?

The first mice had one button, and then for years the industry standard was two buttons, but today all the major mouse manufacturers offer both two and three-button designs. Microsoft Windows has built-in support for the left and right mouse buttons, but if your mouse has a middle button, it can usually be configured to perform a specific action, such as move to the next window, exit the current program, press the Alt key, and so on. A middle button can be a great benefit if you remember to use it (I have never gotten into the habit of using a middle button). One of my current mice has two additional "thumb buttons" that I do use frequently. The thumb buttons are along the left edge of the mouse; they're both configurable, but by default one of them acts like the Back button on a web browser, and the other activates an on-screen magnifier that has proven to be very useful.

Mouse Wheel
The mouse wheel on my two Microsoft optical mice was a great surprise for me, because I didn't expect it to be useful and yet I end up using it all the time. It is very easy and very convenient to scroll a document or a web page up and down smoothly using the mouse wheel, without having to move the mouse or use the keyboard at all. This is the single feature I miss the most when I use other mice.


Take It For A Test Drive
Researching your options online will give you an idea of what's available, but before you buy a mouse, go to your local computer center and try out the display models. Do not skip this step! It doesn't matter how many features are packed into your new mouse; if it doesn't feel good in your hand, it's not the mouse for you. You're going to be spending a lot of time with your mouse — make sure the fit is perfect.

Beware Scary Spyware!

As immensely enjoyable as it is to be online the price we pay has gone up, way up, for that pleasure. For the ease of information, instant gratification, for the all knowing personal shopper, researcher, translator and match maker, we figured the transmission of our email address or ip address was a small token to pay. I certainly felt that way in the beginning of this love affair with the internet. But like any relationship, the brand new glow ended a long time ago and now the I can clearly see the reality. The path of the long haul if you will. And it is a bit scary to me. The current name of that scary is Spyware! Recently I started having major problems with my computer.

I would be online doing the usual things like checking email or reading the news, then links I click on would take a long time to load. Eventually my computer screen would get the slow and choppy disease. You know: the blue loading line is barely moving in the address bar, the page is totally white because it is in between links and the mouse isn’t moving and you pray it doesn’t crash. Then it just crashes. I would go through that cycle 10 times a day. I ran my disk repair program but it wasn’t a hardware problem. Then I realized that in the midst of all that transmitting and downloading, my computer may have been compromised by spyware.

I immediately starting looking for a spyware remover. A certain indignation came over me as I searched for my spyware remover. How dare they! Whomever ‘they’ were. I thought about what was being done to my computer, what information had been compromised. I felt that something was sucking the life off my hard drive, had copied all my files and was monitoring my online movements. I finally found the removal program and ran it on my computer. There were numerous spyware detected and removed from my system and the problems stopped. I learned my lesson. I decided that ‘they’ was really ‘me’.

I knew about spyware but didn'’t guard against it even though I was online a lot. I was aware of the risk and ignored it then but not now. I guard my information and I run my spyware detection and remover program frequently. You should too.

DVI Cables: A Visual Revolution.

When the DVI standard was introduced by the DDWG at the end of the last century (yes, believe it or not, it is true the DVI has been around that long) the previous standard for getting information from your player or your computer to your screen was VGA (which stands for Video Graphics Array). IBM brought it out way back in 1988 to connect computers to computer monitors, which of course were all CRT (Cathode Ray Tubes) back then. The original version would only deal with resolutions of 640 x 480 pixels though there were various upgrades such as sVGA. Resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels are available from various upgrades to the standard. The system used those little D shaped fifteen pin connectors that still appear on your monitors and computer though you quite likely don’t use them anymore.

The enormous difference between VGA and DVI is that VGA is analogue; that is the data is encoded by changing the amplitude and frequency of the electrical signal, whilst DVI is, as the name says, digital. That is all the data is encoded as naughts and ones.

With VGA we start off with a digital signal being output from our computer. This has to go through what is called a DTA (Digital to Analogue) converter which, as it says on the tin, converts the digital input to an analogue signal. This is amplified and sent through a dvi cable to an ATD (Analogue to Digital) converter at the display end. Naturally this converts the analogue signal back to a stream of binary data. This process of changing the nature of the signal puts many limitations on what can be achieved. It takes a significant amount of time to perform the digital analogue conversions, and errors can creep in. There are restrictions on screen refresh rate, resolution, image integrity etc.

A system using DVI is digital from beginning to end. This means that very much higher data transmission rates can be achieved allowing much higher screen resolutions and faster screen refresh rates. DVI has brought about a revolution in video technology.
